Why Be and Become?

The world is full of paradoxes.  They can drive us crazy, and they can lead us to deep wisdom.

Being and becoming is one of those paradoxes – a seeming contradiction between the stillness of being and the motion of becoming; between the peace of acceptance and the energy of aspiration.

The truth is, we are both being and becoming at once, all the time, our entire lives. That is what it is to be human: perfect as we are, and continually evolving.

Ideally, our inner shifts in focus are gentle ones, accompanied by calm and ease and joy.

Easier said than done.

It can be hard to be at peace with ourselves as we are, with mindful self-compassion and acceptance in each present moment – especially while living in a culture that invites feelings of inadequacy and imperfection at every turn.

It can be hard to become or achieve what we desire for ourselves – without falling prey to the punishing sort of striving so much of our “never enough” culture engenders.

But finding an inner balance between being and becoming is more than possible. It’s the essence of wellness, of being beautifully human.

You and Your World

As we embrace the stillness and energy within ourselves, so also must we engage with the world around us – be that our circle of friends and family, our workplaces, our communities, our very planet.

Accepting reality as it is can equate to less suffering – particularly for ourselves. Other people are the way they are, not how we want them to be; the world is the way it is, not how we want it to be.  The sooner we get that, the sooner we move past the pain of our own delusion and denial.

And yet…

Challenging reality can also equate to less suffering: less discord, social injustice, environmental destruction – less of whatever ills keep you awake at night. “Be the change you wish to see in the world”, as Mahatma Gandhi said.

Two sides of a weighty coin.

What in the world do we accept and what do we challenge – and how might we do both without giving way to despair, without losing our own internal balance?

These are profound questions that we must answer for ourselves – but not necessarily by ourselves. Conversation helps to set us free – not as a substitute for reflection, but as a kind of light and love that shines through it.
